The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: From Book to Embodied Myth
Priscilla Hobbs

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opens in Universal Studios® Orlando in Spring 2010. In this presentation, I will overview the park and discuss how the experience of it is more than just a fun opportunity for fans to experience Harry's World. It is in fact a mythic space that brings the myth of Harry Potter to life and allows fans and non-fans alike to embody the stories and become characters in ways not previously available to the fandom. In addition to lecture, there will be opportunity for discussion and sharing experiences of the park. Questions to consider include: what are the limitations of the park and its relationship to the rest of Universal Studios; does the park strengthen your connection to the stories; if you worked for Universal, what changes would you make to the park; and, do you think having the theme park is overkill?

Priscilla is a doctoral student at Pacifica Graduate Institute where she studies comparative mythology. She is writing her dissertation on the Disney Theme Parks and a book about Harry Potter and mythology.
