Mix Tape Culture in the Wizarding World
Heidi Tandy & Hermorrine
A mixtape is familiar to any child of the 80s or 90s - it's a cassette tape (later, a CD) that includes a selection of songs that mean something to the creator of the mix tape - and the person it's intended for. This round table will ask attendees to think about and discuss two distinct issues - how have young witches and wizards made mixes of their favorite magical and muggle songs for their friends, crushes and significant others; and what songs do we Muggles have on our personal mix tapes about the wizarding world?
Heidi Tandy has, over the years, been involved with the Help_Haiti auction community, FictionAlley, HPEF, the Organization for Transformative Works, the 2008 and 2009 Comic-Con Harry Potter panels and The Leaky Cauldron. In real life, she is an intellectual property attorney in South Florida, the mother of three Harry Potter fans and a firm believer in the maxim “Fandom is my fandom.
Vicki Dolenga, known in fandom as Hermorrine, is the former headmistress of RestrictedSection.org and has presented at Nimbus 2003 and The Witching Hour on both slash and het fan fiction in the Harry Potter universe, and has written fics based on songs. She is a former radio personality and music director, and she spent a few years handling social media for a musician/actor. Since she was laid off from her job as a project manager a over a year ago, she’s spent a lot of her free time promoting the rock band 30 Seconds to Mars as well as a few smaller acts. Music and reading are definitely high on her list of passions! Born and raised in the Chicago area, she’s lived near Los Angeles for the past 3 years and currently shares everything she owns with her very spoiled - but completely adorable! - adopted Doxie mix, Melody.
