JK Rowling and Failure
Penny Gershman

After the Harry Potter series was complete, the fans were able to get a glimpse into the mind of JK Rowling through several mediums.  In post-book interviews, we were told about the debilitating depression that Jo suffered earlier in her life.  Ever the consummate storyteller and lesson-teacher, Jo was able to teach her fans why that dark time in her life may not have been a bad thing for her.  In this round table discussion, we will discuss the connection between JK Rowling's 2008 commencement address at Harvard University, in which she spoke about the benefits of failure, and the short story in Beedle the Bard titled "The Warlock's Hairy Heart."  Finally, we will offer our opinions on how Jo may have taught these lessons throughout the Harry Potter series as well.

Penny Gershman has loved Harry Potter since 2001. She and her husband Greg have hosted the Harry Potter Prognostications Podcast since 2006.  When not fawning over Potter related material, Penny is a Speech-Language Pathologist in rehab settings and mother of three Potter-loving children.  She also hosts the Smart Mouths Podcast along with several other Potter Nerds.   She has a Master’s of Science degree and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Towson University.  That has nothing to do with her love of Harry Potter or her presentation skills but she figured everyone else would be giving their credentials so she didn't want to feel left out.
